Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 3 ⅓ cups plain flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) dried yeast
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 ½ tablespoons softened butter
- ¾ cup lukewarm milk
For Smearing:
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
For Sprinkling:
- Cinnamon, to taste
- Sugar, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, dry yeast, egg, sugar, salt, softened butter, and lukewarm milk.
- Knead the mixture into a dough.
- Cover the dough with a clean cloth and leave it to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Roll Out the Dough:
- After the dough has risen, place it on a floured surface.
- Roll it out into a sheet about 0.5 cm thick.
- Brush the entire surface of the dough with melted butter.
- Sprinkle generously with sugar and cinnamon. (You can use cinnamon sugar if you prefer.)
- Shape the Treats:
- Roll up the sheet of dough into a log.
- Cut the log into rounds approximately 2 cm wide.
- Place the rounds (snails) on a tray lined with baking paper.
- Let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Prepare for Baking:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk with 2 tablespoons of milk.
- Brush the risen snails with the egg yolk mixture.
- Bake the Treats:
- Bake the snails in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Finish with Butter:
- After baking, brush the snails with a little more melted butter for a beautiful shine and extra flavor.
